| SPOILER WARNING This article contains major SPOILERS for Chapter 4. Read at your own risk! |
Chapter 4 of Deltarune is titled “Prophecy.” It was first released on June 4, 2025, alongside Chapter 3, as a paid purchase. Both were released as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title the next day.
This chapter sees the heroes exploring the Dark Sanctuaries, a set of three Dark Worlds created in the town church, learning more about the Legend of Delta Rune as they attempt to stop the Knight. This chapter takes a darker tone than previous ones, evidenced by moments such as the Weird Route continuing, disturbing revelations about the prophecy, and the first appearance of a Titan.
This chapter's bonus bosses are the Hammer of Justice and Mike; the former holds the Shadow Crystal.
Plot
Back in TV World, Kris and Susie are about to seal the Dark Fountain. Susie ponders about the Roaring Knight, but then tells Kris to seal the fountain quickly. However, before the player sees Kris do so, it cuts to the Dreemurr residence in the Light World, where Toriel is waking Kris up for breakfast. During breakfast, Toriel invites Susie to go to church with her and Kris, which she reluctantly accepts. However, when she tries to leave, she remembers how the Knight took Undyne to the Shelter, which is close to the church. Therefore, some people at the church may know how to get in.
After church services, Susie has Kris ask the churchgoers about the Shelter, while she helps herself to drinks. Kris learns from Alphys and Noelle that the Mayor (Noelle's mother) keeps important info at her home, therefore she is their best link. After reporting back to Susie with the information, Susie manages to get Noelle to invite her and Kris over under the guise of studying for their school projects. When they leave the church, Kris’ father, Asgore, attempts to give Toriel some flowers. However, Toriel leaves, asking if they can talk later, so he gives them to Kris.
Later, at Noelle’s house, Susie distracts Noelle, while Kris searches the Holiday house for clues. In Noelle’s absent sister Dess’ room, they find the code in her guitar. But before the player can see the entire code (we only see the digits "122"), Kris suddenly rips their SOUL out of their body and hides it away. The player-controlled SOUL escapes and travels through the air ducts. In the kitchen, we can see Kris on the phone with an mysterious caller, who warns them that Susie must not get the guitar. In the bathroom, Kris’ father, Asgore (who is apparently cleaning) can be seen in the bathroom and a bedroom, discussing a black shard he has, and how he can get Toriel to believe him about something, and get the family back together before Asriel comes home.
Eventually, the SOUL makes it to the basement and shuts off the power, leading Susie and Noelle there. When the SOUL (under an angel decoration) startles Susie and Noelle, they capture it and take it to the living room. When the two leave, it escapes to Dess’ room, only to be attacked by Kris when it comes near Dess’ guitar. However, the noise made attracts Susie and Noelle, causing Kris to hide themself and their SOUL in the closet. The SOUL makes its way to the guitar again, but Kris attacks it, making more noise. Susie investigates the closet, berates Kris for making so much noise, and grabs the guitar. When Noelle sees Susie with the guitar, she reluctantly asks her to play it, and they leave. After they do so, Kris puts the SOUL back in their body, and contacts their caller, who says they’ll “be right there.”

In the living room, Susie is playing the guitar, when Asgore arrives, saying that Noelle’s mother is about to be home, much to her surprise, and she tells Susie to put the guitar away. Sure enough, her mother, Carol, shows up right after, and upon seeing Susie with Dess’ guitar, grabs it from her, and sends Noelle to the kitchen. When Susie tries to explain, she just demands that she leave, while also telling her not to talk to her daughter again. Before Susie leaves though, she decides she’ll be taking Noelle to the festival tomorrow, to spite Carol. Carol also tells Asgore, who has been eating from the snack tray this whole time, to do it outside. When Kris leaves, Carol confronts them, apologizing for what just happened, and reassures that they are welcome to the Holiday home anytime.
Outside, after she and Kris talk to Asgore for a bit, Susie reveals that she saw the code in Dess’ guitar, but couldn’t memorize it. Still without the code, Kris and Susie are ready to call it a day, and head to Kris's house. However, the door is locked, so they decide to ask Toriel, who is in the church, they open the church doors only to find it now contains a Dark World. When they go inside, they see the Knight and Kris gives chase, but their efforts fail (if Kris does reach the Knight, they just do nothing). After a fall, they reunite with Ralsei. Susie is attempting to practice her healing magic on Kris's injuries, but Ralsei restores them back to normal, and the three set out to explore the Dark World once again.
Kris and Susie entering the church's Dark World, as "ATRIUM" plays
This Dark World has stained glass pieces explaining the Legend of Delta Rune. As Ralsei explains, everything the prophecy says will come true, with the first few detailing the Roaring. The Delta Warriors then encounter an old man looking for the study. The heroes agree to help him, with Susie mistaking him for a Lightner who got stuck in the Dark World. The Old Man proves to be more competent than he seems, and the group safely make it to his study. Throughout the Dark World, the Old Man manages to give Susie more confidence in her healing powers, namely thorugh healing a Darkner they encountered named Jackenstein (who was injured on the inside and not the outside), and she thanks him for being the only one who was able to teach her properly. Before the Delta Warriors leave the Old Man’s study to seal the Fountain, he asks Susie to take his letter with her.
Near the end of the sanctuary, the heroes encounter the Knight again. Susie gives chase, but they escape through a Great Door, which is locked. However, the heroes have already unlocked the way to the Fountain, which Kris seals. Kris and Susie find themselves back in the lobby of the church late at night, and find that there is a seperate Dark World in the main congregation room, which is locked.
Looking for the key, they head into Father Alvin's office, where Susie makes a surprising discovery in his desk drawers: a glass case of dust with an axe in it, and a photo of the Old Man. Turns out, the Old Man was really Alvin’s late father, Gerson Boom, meaning the Gerson in the Dark World must’ve been the Darkner form of his ashes. Additionally, Susie's letter to Alvin has made it into the real world, fully complete, telling him that his father was proud of him and to follow his hopes and dreams. Without a way to get in the congregation room, Susie gets the idea to create her own Dark Fountain and get in through that Dark World. Remembering what Queen said back in Chapter 2, she borrows Kris’ knife and stabs the floor with it, successfully creating a Dark World.
However, this 2nd Sanctuary isn’t exactly the same. The colors are different, and many Darkners have been petrified. Exploring the sanctuary, Kris and Susie learn more about the Prophecy: the three heroes are the Prince, the Cage, and the Girl. When they are about to read how to save the worlds, however, the glass is suddenly shattered by a figure resembling Gerson. Susie gives chase, ending up in pitch-black darkness. When she lights it up with her healing powers, she only sees a monstrous face. Ralsei suddenly appears and destroys the being, explaining that one of the statues from Gerson's study came to life and became hostile, and that Darkners based on memories of loved ones only appear in specific levels of darkness. Susie angrily berates Ralsei for not telling them earlier, and Ralsei admits that he has been hiding things about the prophecy and the Dark World, in order to not upset her and Kris. They reconcile, with Ralsei promising to be more honest, and Susie admitting that she doesn't care how the prophecy ends, as whatever it is, they'll do it together.
After the 2nd Sanctuary's Fountain is sealed, Kris and Susie return to the Light World and unlock the main door to enter the Dark World once again, where the Great Door has been opened. This 3rd Sanctuary is similar to the first Sanctuary, but the stained glass images seen in the other sanctuaries are surrounding many areas. The heroes see the Fountain in the distance, which is "calling [them]." Since the Knight seems to already be there, they decide to hurry up. Eventually, they reach a large wall, which Ralsei feels the Fountain's presence behind. Suddenly, the Knight's blades appear and start shatteing the wall. Luckily, Jackenstein appears, offering to help them climb up. However, the Knight breaks the walls they're climbing on, causing them to fall. Depending on the player's actions in battle either all of their recruits stack up to lift them up, or Jackenstein seemingly sacrifices himself to help the heroes up, the latter of which angers Susie.
The heroes enter a pitch black corrdor, where the Knight begins attacking them. Suddenly, Kris' SOUL lightens up, with Susie and Ralsei staying close to them to avoid the Knight's attacks. Eventually, their attacks become undodgeable, so Susie and Ralsei decide to take turns shielding Kris. By the time they reach the end of the corridor, they are all at 1 HP.

Eventually, they reach the end of the stairs, where they encounter the Knight. Susie begins to taunt them, believing that the reason they hide in the Dark World is because they know they can't beat them in the Light World. When the Knight laughs at this, she contunes, believing she's right, and that if "[they] lose that fountain, it's over!!" Immediately after, despite Ralsei's pleas, the Knight proceeds to make another Fountain within the darkness. This Fountain solidifies, and inside of it hatches a harbinger of the Roaring, a Titan. Ralsei instructs the team to climb it, as it won’t attack itself. As a being that is incapable of reason, there's only one solution: FIGHTing. After defeating its spawn, the Delta Warriors eventually reach the top, where the Titan has been waiting. They take it on, but due to them only damaging its outsides, the Titan easily regenerates. Suddenly, the Gerson appears, to help fight the Titan. Susie decides to throw Kris inside the Titan, where their SOUL manages to destroy it for good.
After Susie asks Kris about that “red heart thing,” she realizes she has to talk to Gerson, and rushes ahead. Ralsei, realizing Susie will see the end of the prophecy, rushes to stop her, but it’s too late; Susie shatters the glass. When Ralsei questions her, she laughs it off, saying it's stupid because none of them would ever let it happen. Realizing that he was unable to change the outcome of the prophecy and that Susie took it well, Ralsei breaks down crying. Kris motivates Ralsei that they need to be like Susie and continue, even in the face of whatever may happen.
After sealing the last Fountain Kris and Susie wake up in the congregation room at twilight. No closer to opening the Shelter, they head to Kris’ house, where they walk into Toriel partying and dancing with Sans, their new neighbor, in the living room, choir practice having been canceled. Uncomfortable with Toriel and Sans' behavior, Susie decides not to sleep over again, and leaves.
Later that night, Kris, with their SOUL in a birdcage, is struggling to sleep, attempting to shut out the noise downstairs. Meanwhile, Susie is right outside, still determined not to let the end of the prophecy come true. Once she leaves, Kris attempts to escape through the window. However, they are interrupted by a phone call. It is from the same person from before, telling them not to forget what they “promised.”
After the credits, the Voice from Chapter 1 congratulates the player for making it halfway through the game, but states that "IT IS STILL WAITING. HOW MUCH LONGER NOW...? MY DELTARUNE.”
Weird Route
- Main article: Weird Route
If the Weird Route was completed in Chapter 2, it will continue from here. Instead of Susie and Kris asking if they can come over, Noelle will approach the two and invite them over to her house after church. There, after Kris rips out their SOUL, she asks Kris if they can talk privately in her room.
If the SOUL goes to the vent in Noelle’s room, the player can overhear a conversation between Kris and Noelle, where it is revealed that during the previous night, Kris took Berdly to the hospital and visited Noelle. During their visit, Kris claimed the Dark World was just a prank and removed a thorn (the Thorn Ring's form in the Light World), from her hand. When a choice prompt appears, the SOUL ends up in the room, and retakes control of Kris, and revelals their presence to Noelle.
Eventually, the player will force Kris to equip with the Thorn Ring, locking in the route for the chapter. The screen will turn black as a small, unknown red particle the same color as Kris's SOUL is created where the Thorn Ring is located, and it cracks the screen before fading away. Afterwards, Kris goes to the bathroom, where they furiously throw the SOUL in a trash can and kick it, before Asgore tells them that Carol is having everyone leave the house.
The rest of the plot continues relatively unchanged, but at the end of the chapter, Kris recieves a call (presumably from Carol), asking if they're going to the festival, ominously stating that Noelle is "really looking forward to seeing [them]." When the scene fades to black, the red dot from earlier cutscenes appears right after.

Trivia
- This chapter's opening title is unique compared to previous ones. It features a glimmering blue background within the game logo, the same seen on the "prophecy glass" seen throughout the Sanctuaries, while a portion of "Neverending Night" plays, before the logo shatters into glass-like pieces.
- It is also the first opening to feature music.
- This is the first chapter to feature SAVE points in the Light World. They where added due to play testers saying players would find it inconvenient to not be able to save during the extended Light World segment so Toby hesitantly added SAVE points.
- It is also the first where the heroes explore more than one Dark World.
- This is the first chapter where Rouxls Kaard does not face off against the heroes,
- The code in Dess' guitar is heavily speculated to be "1225" (December 25), keeping up with the Christmas theme of the Holiday family, and likely also referenching Dess (a "December holiday").
- This chapter also features an armour piece, called the GoldWidow which is obtained by donating 9,999 or more Dark Dollars to the donation fountain in the First Sanctuary, where an NPC states that "You might as well have donated that money to a spider" most likely a nod to a moment in Undertale, where giving 9,999 G to Muffet for a Spider Donut will make it so that she doesn't initiate her fight.
Changes
- Two days after the chapter's release, the image that appears when equipping Noelle with the Thorn Ring was changed from an animation of a rose that spiraled into formation and then wilted into several fragments to a single red pixel, before that was replaced with sprouting thorns in the next patch. The latter chnage was done and to strengthen the imagery while still carrying across the scene's intended meaning,[1] and former was likely as response to players interpreting the rose animation as the SOUL forcing Kris to sexually assault Noelle (given that "deflowering" is often taken as a term for a "loss of virginity”).
